Juan Villafañe, MD

Dr. Villafañe has practiced pediatric cardiology and cardiac electrophysiology in Kentucky since 1986 when he joined the University of Louisville to become the first pediatric cardiac electrophysiologist in the whole region.

He taught medical students, residents and fellows for 25 years. He is now a full time senior pediatric cardiologist practicing non-invasive cardiology and electrophysiology. He has a faculty appointment as Professor in Pediatrics at the University of Kentucky.

Dr. Villafañe is board certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Cardiology. He received his pediatric cardiology training at the University of Puerto Rico in 1981. In addition, he did a two-year fellowship at the University of Miami specializing in pediatric cardiology and cardiac electrophysiology. He was involved in basic research. Dr. Villafañe has received awards from the City of Louisville Mayor’s Office, the University of Louisville and the American Medical Association Physician’s Recognition Award in Continuing Medical Education for 20 years in a row.  He is an active member in 15 Medical Societies and a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Dr Villafañe has authored or co-authored over 30 publications and over 50 abstracts in medical literature. In addition, he has done over 200 scientific presentations and lectures at local, national and international pediatric cardiology meetings including the American College of Cardiology, Heart Rhythm Society, American Academy of Pediatrics, Society for Pediatric Research, American Heart Association, World Congress of Cardiac Pacing, World Congress of Pediatric Cardiology, Inter-American Congress of Cardiology, World Symposium on Cardiac Pacing and Electrophysiology and many others. At the local level he has given Grand Rounds at the University of Kentucky, University of Louisville, Jewish Hospital, Baptist Hospital East, Trover Medical Center and over 100 community lectures in pediatric cardiology.

 Dr. Villafañe is a medical advisory board member for Dysautonomia, Youth Network of America and a member of the Bioethics Committee of the Greater Louisville Medical Society. Since 2001 he has been a member of the Child and Adolescent Committee of Medicaid. He was the USA delegate for the Latin American Society of Pediatric Cardiology and Surgery from 2003-2007.

On October 30, 2008, Dr.Villafane was selected as a Fellow of the Heart Rhythm Society, the first cardiac electrophysiologist in the Commonwealth to receive such an honor which is bestowed upon members of the society with significant achievements, service and prominence in the field of cardiac arrhythmia.

In March,2010, he was elected Governor of the American College of Cardiology in Kentucky and the President of its state Chapter.

In March, 2010, he was appointed as full Professor (Gratis) , in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Kentucky.

 In April 2010, Dr. Villafane formed a coalition of a dozen organizations to deal with childhood obesity and  Tobacco issues in our Commonwealth.  Their goal is to created community awareness of these problems and support legislature that deals with these two issues.

In August 2010, Dr.Villafane agreed to become a member of the advocacy expert panel of the American Heart Association Great Rivers affiliate which involves 5 states.

On September 2011, he received a special achievement award from the American Academy of Pediatrics for distinguished service and dedication to the mission and goals of the Academy.
